Organiser's Comments
Who would have predicted such a glorious clear starry night under a three quarter moon for the Midlands Night Champs? It was so clear and bright you could almost do without your headlights! - we even got a good view of Mir passing rapidly overhead.
I hope everyone who competed had an enjoyable run - and enjoyed the soup afterwards. I would like to thank all the helpers, without whom these events couldn't happen. Particular thanks to Bob Alderson, who as Sunday's Organiser kept me (a first time organiser) on the straight and narrow, and to Keith Roberts, who gamely took on rounding up trophies and sorting out presentations for the whole weekend. Also a big thank you to both the Controller, Peter Crosby, and the Assistant Controller, Jeff Harris, both of EBOR, who stepped in at fairly short notice.
Finally, as NOC Fixtures Secretary, can I ask all you existing and 'would be' Organisers, Planners and Controllers to step forward and help me put names in place for 98/99 events. I'm particularly interested in hearing from potential Organisers - don't be put off if you've not done it before, there'll be lots of help, support and encouragement available to help you on your way. Thank you.
Richard Torr
Planner's Comments "I'm thinking of putting the Start on the north-west edge, about 2k from Registrations." "In February? At night? 8.5k for M21 could be OK But what if it snows?"
So we cut out this, and shortened that, and played it safe, very safe. And then the weather was perfect and the moon as bright as the midnight sun, and the winning times where quick, very quick.
Thanks to the Sunday planners, Peter Hubberstey and John Dalton, for giving me first pick of the most runnable bits of the forest, and for their advice on choice of control sites. Thanks to Pete Crosby for ironing out the wrinkles.
Alan Beardsley
